Ever wondered what your state or city name means? Well, I am not sure you want to know, but the Atlas of True Names will tell you. A project of cartographers Stephan Hormes and Silke Peust, the atlas reveals the etymological roots, or original meanings, of the familiar terms on today’s maps of the World, and in it the United States – of the Home Ruler. Are you from the ‘Land of People with the Dugout Canoes’, or from the “New Isle of Spears”? You don’t know? Well, check out the map below (click to enlarge).
