Imagine you are an Istanbul shop owner and first thing you see in the morning is this. Man, what’s this? Chairs man, a lot of chairs, put there by Colombian artist Doris Salcedo, who has a fondness for domestic and commonplace materials – from textiles to wood furniture – that show wear and tear over time. She put this installation on (and on) for display in the framework of the at 8th International Istanbul Biennial in 2003. In that year there was a strange, unexplained shortage of chairs around town.
